The wonderful Chatty has been home with me for three weeks now and we are loving every minute of it. We have spent a lot of time getting to know one another during long rambling hacks out. We are doing a lot of boxing out in the trailer as although she loads well, she finds the actual travelling a bit stressful but she is getting used to it now. Yesterday we had our first lesson, in an indoor school. The weather was appalling with howling winds and rain drumming on the roof of both the trailer, on the way there, and in the indoor school. Although slightly worried, she behaved impreccably. My instructor is used to working with young and inexperienced horses and was careful not to ask too much of us too soon. We had a lovely time.
Next weekend we are off to Hampshire for our first Le Trec competition. More of a play at the moment as I am very out of practice and Chatty is a newbie but I am looking forward to it.

Hi Chatty's mum. Its great to hear how you are getting on with Chatty. I would be particularly interested to hear how the Le Trec goes - I dont know a great deal about it and would like to find out more as I have always assumed that Avril's horses, with their training, would be great at this. Do keep us posted.

I loved the report of Chatty on the Quantocks - my, what a horrible journey you had! The Quantocks are my home territory and it is where the wonderful Duke lived in his 2 years with me. I used to ride for hours over the hills - nowadays I take my little JRT for a walk there every now and then. Many years ago I took part in a 9 mile race across the Quantocks, organised by the Quantock Staghounds. There were 5 races and I was in the class for horses living on the Quantocks. Horse and rider could take their own line but HAD to report to various stewarding check points en route. We scrambled down some very steep hills! Going down the side of one coomb my clever old horse sat on his bum and slid down! I joined up with a nice lady who was (still is) an endurance rider and we breezed around the course nicely. We didn't go out to win but we had a most enjoyable day out with our horses! Two ladies from South Somerset who hadn't ridden the hills before were scared to death - one was bounced out of her saddle within a 100m of the start! I'll never forget them!

Oh this dreadful weather. I have been trying to keep Chatty ticking over but have had to make do with rushing down the yard whenever there is a break in the weather. I've invested in some brilliant waterproof chaps which have already seen plenty of action. However, it has been a chance to give Chatty an overhaul. She saw the vet last week for her third injection and had her teeth checked and rasped for the first time since I have owned her. I wanted to have her trust before a strange person started putting a contraption around her head, forcing her mouth open. She had some very sharp edges on the outside of her teeth which had been rubbing the inside of her mouth so hopefully she will be more comfortable now. She also saw Bea, the McTimoney practitioner for the second time. Bea was very pleased with her progress. A slight dip on one side of her pelvis which was corrected last time has held so it was just a quick all over check and Chatty was pronounced pretty perfect. Signed off now until next April when I'll have her checked again before our competitions start. Hope everyone else is coping ok with the weather.

Hi Chatty's mum, I've invested in some uber costly overtrousers by Berghaus, quite providential given this awful weather. It takes a lot to stop us riding, but today's high winds of 65 miles an hour with lashing rain gave us the opporunity to spend the day tack cleaning. We now have rows of gleaming bridles and racks of supple saddles all looking beautiful in preparation for another soaking tomorrow! Glad Chatty has passed her health check and hope you both winter well. Here's to some crisp winter days filled with sunshine.

Thank goodness, lovely crisp, sunny day. Chatty and I were relieved to be able to get out for a walk today. Couldn't do much trotting as I still haven't got the clippers out and she gets too hot. Roll on the summer!

Lovely sunny day yesterday so the clippers came out. Hats off to Avril and Annie for the foundation training that Chatty has received. Let her sniff them first then turned them on and just held them against her should then off we went. Her coat is very thick andI worried that the blades might be a bit suspect as I haven't used the clippers for a good couple of years but I managed to get half her neck off and her chest and half her head. She was very well behaved and actually seemed to enjoy it. Will send the blades off for a re-sharpen before expanding the clip out to a chaser cut. She already looks pretty smart. Means that she will have to have a lightweight rug on from now on but it is a small price to pay for a horse that doesn't get hot and uncomfortable and, being purely selfish, so nice to have a clean dry horse to ride when I get her in from the field.

When I first met Chatty I was not very impressed with her name - apparently she was very vocal when Avril first had her. However, looking up her name on the internet, it is a variant on the name Charlize and is french. As she is a Normandy Cob I now think it is quite fitting. Well done Avril!

Hi Chatty'smum - you may have started something here, as I've just looked up the meaning for Penny and for Millie, and both are strangely accurate!
Penny (or Penelope): capable, clever, loyal - spot on!
Millie: industrious, striving, work, bee, honey, gentle strength, brave strength - again, spot on (even the bee bit - she's always busy!)
Cheers, Ange.

Hoping the snow is going to stay away until after the weekend. Clipper blades have arrived back nice and sharp so planning to clip a bit more off Chatty today then off to Womenswold in Canterbury on Sunday for our first attempt at X country. Not a competition, just a practice session, but looking forward to it immensely.

Did you go x country yesterday? Everything pretty snowed over up here, and riding impossible. You must be very disappointed if the event was cancelled, and so are we, as love to know how it went.
