As the Ashford Valley hunt had cancelled their meet we decided we ought to be as sensible as them and cancel as the ground was so hard. Very disappointing. Luckily, bearing in the mind the weather we now have, I hadn't yet expanded on her clip so she is nice and snug in her rug. I love putting my hands under the rug and feeling that warmth. The horses were very pleased to see me with the hay today and kept following me about. I think they probably wanted in but the roads are terrible between my house and the yard so it's safer to keep them out than risk not being able to get to them. Put my large apple box out yesterday to keep the hay off the floor and contained and have filled it up with three bales of hay, just in case. More snow threatened!

Hi Lisa and Saf
Yes, mine will live out all year. If this snow stays around too long and they start looking really fed up I may bring them in just to give them a bit of a respite from it all. However, they looked fine yesterday. I hadn't intended to rug my old cob but when I saw him yesterday he had icicles hanging off him all over so I relented, put a rug on him and minutes later he looked much happier. I think we stable them because we think they would be happier but in reality, as long as they are warm, have water and food, they are generally happier out in the fresh air, able to move about a bit, particularly the hardier kind of animal. Might think diifferently with a tb.

Incidentally, mine can get out of the rain and snow if they want as there is a tractor shed on the side of their turnout. The only time they seem to use it though is when it is hot, in the summer. Roll on Summer!

A couple of pics of Chatty looking snug in the recent snow. Her mum wasn't sure how to upload them, so I've helped out. Attachments:

Thanks Avril. They are both getting to enjoy their daily scratch underneath their rugs when I check they are warm enough. Chatty was almost falling onto me today, leaning as close as she could for her scratch. Rugs off tomorrow, I think, for a good grooming session and I'm hoping the ice will have gone so I can hack around the lanes.

You must be having different weather to us. We've had a hoare frost covering absolutely everything with frozen ground, and now tonight it's snowing again. Annie hasn't been able to get in for a week, and seems like it's never going to end!

Lovely pics of Chatty - they adore a good roll in the snow. ;D We have had no more snow since Thursday, but its still well below freezing, sheets of thick ice everywhere making getting about treacherous, freezing fog, taps are still frozen up .... and so it goes on. The forecast, for us, on the run up to Christmas is milder, which should at least make all the usual chores a little easier and quicker. Hope things get better for you soon Avril.

Well Avril, we live and learn. I thought, what is hoar frost and had to look it up on the internet (I obviously have too much time on my hands). We have, indeed been having a hoar frost and we did get a sprinkling of snow last night. It has cleared now but it is just sooooo cold. Think I may be developing into a fair weather rider. Maybe I'll just wait until the temperature goes above freezing before venturing out for a ride again!

Glad I could add to your lexicon, chattysmum. It's so cold I go round with coat, scarf, hat, gloves, and that's indoors! Still frozen here and no sign of a thaw. Is anyone mentioning global warming?

well how utterly uneducated do I feel now..... I just thought Avril had made a typo error and just read the words as hard frost!!!!!
I have then read Avrils reply and read lexicon as lepricorn!!! I think the cold is getting into my brain!!
brrrrrrrrrrrr lets have some warmer weather soon
Ps my chinese docter told me last week that apparently this weather has been caused by our negative collective conscious because of our global worries with the economy and its effects on us all..... well it makes a change from global warming!

Crikey, I had to go to the internet again to discover what a lexicon was. Em, I think your chinese doctor's opinion on our collective conscious depression causing the bad weather is priceless. Oh, and we have more snow forecast tonight. Joy oh joy. Thaw promised for the weekend though.

Our Rosette arrived from the BHS today - Chatty and I managed a creditable 10th place in the UK Trec pairs competition league this year. Can't wait for next year now that Chatty knows what it is all about. Roll on next season.
