Hello, my name is Ruth, I first discovered MSC when looking for a horse to buy for my Mum, as I had recently moved back to the Midlands from Leeds after a relationship breakdown. I already had my Arab mare, Chloe, whom I had when she was a baby, she was 11 when I moved her back down here, Mum had always loved horses but never had the time or money to pursue it.
Now circumstances had changed and Mum could afford a horse and had me to help look after it.
So after many fruitless calls to private ads for horses that 'seemed' suitable for my Mum, my Mum found this website.
At the time (11 years ago this year) there was a 15.1hh piebald gelding for sale called 'Drum' whom we fell in love with online.
We decided to make the journey down to Kent to see him, and -this is one of those cases where he DEFINITELY chose us, or me, I walked into his stable, aware I was imposing on his personal space, waited a moment as he stood in the corner very steadily, but very quietly. Almost like he knew, and was as wary as I when approaching a new horse.
I ran my hand down his neck and side, and asked him to life a hoof up.
He looked at me, like he was considering it, then, very gently and politely, lifted his huge easy hoof up, and let me hold it.
Initial trust had been established.
We actually went to view 3 horses that day, all at MSC, and Mum, who had seen the other two, one who was already sold practically, and the other too small, came and said 'hi' to Drum, and we were asked if we would like to go for a hack around the village, Mum on Drum, the now only suitable horse, and me on the mare we'd also come to see, but who was too small for my tall Mum.
So Mum got on Drum -and that was it!!! They were inseparable from the off. Mum hadn't ridden since she was a child, how she managed to ride round on a hack, on a horse she had never even met before, staggered me; but I get it now; Drum was looking after her!!!
So he came to live with my Arab, Chloe. He was only 4 or 5, and is a heavyweight gypsy cob, with absolute perfect combination, wonderful paces, and the most gentlemanly manners I have ever known in a horse.
They went from strength to strength. He now has a horsebox that he goes out in, to local beautiful countryside.
He is totally my Mum's horse. I was worried that, as I was working with him so much initially he might bond with me tighter than Mum, but absolutely noWAY. He adores Mum, and tolerates me!!! I think he regards me as some halfwit fool, who will suffice to feed him/fetch him in, when his real Mum is busy -he has the most comical ways of looking at me, at everything.
He is a huge powerful horse, my Mum has arthritis in her hands and has poor strength, yet Drum (re-named Kelly) is as gentle as a lamb.
Phew. I might have to finish this later... It goes on to say that I purchased a MSC for myself last year, Harmony, the mare that was a surprise birth there from a mare they had purchased without knowing she was in foal.
I shall return to write part 2!!!
