For those of you who look at Facebook, I said I would post a pic of me as a teenager (about 15 or 16) riding a fell pony. Her name was Hazel and she belonged to a very small riding school near Wylye (eventing people will know that name - it's where Lady Russell lived) owned by a young friend at her father's disused gravel pits. I helped her out at weekends and school holidays. I rode her a lot as well as a New Forest pony called Fred. The other horses I rode were Rialto, Jill's retired racehorse and Rosaleen, a TB X NF, who I backed and took to her first few shows. She did well later, after we moved en famille to Cornwall winning at the Bath and West. The other pic is me all dressed up! We had to make do and I was wearing old Land Army cord breeches, a pair of brown army officer's riding boots which I bought from a friend's father and dyed black, my Mum's grey striped jacket which was part of a suit. Ladies wore suits a lot back then in the 1950s! I wore my white school shirt and my school tie and I thought I looked the bees knees! I used to wear this to all the shows I went to. ;D The only genuine "modern" items I wore were the velvet shellac hunting cap (ribbons tucked up) and string gloves.

I love these retro pics which carry so many memories of a lifetime spent among horses. It's hard to believe how much the world has changed in such a relatively short time frame. Thanks for posting Liz.
