Poor Flame is having "one of those weeks"!
Firstly, I had to get the vet out as he suddenly became incredibly lethargic, and looked so wobbly on his hind legs - not just when ridden but just generally. Despite the fact that he has no temp, or cough or nasal discharge, the vet is pretty sure he has a viral infection. So, he will be rested for a week or so and has gone on some Red Cell. If he is not much better in a couple of weeks, she will test for Cushings. She did take bloods and all liver/kidney functions etc are fine thank goodness.
His other problem is that he had a little scab on his forehead, between his eyes, which he then rubbed off and made sore, so I popped some antibiotic cream on, and it was healing really well until he had a major rubbing session one night and made it a much bigger wound. I decided cream was too gunky, so have been cleaning it with antiseptic and then applying some spray and that was working really well, but last night he has rubbed it again and opened it all up. I think it gets itchy as it starts to heal. I obviously cant pop a dressing on it (!) and I cant leave him out at the moment to stop him rubbing it, as the fields are just too water logged ....
Have any of you lovely people got any suggestions as to how I could protect it and help it heal quickly?
Thank you, Sarah. xx

Oh Sarah, what a do, poor you.
I'm not at all sure I can help very much. All I can say that when Mina is getting frustrated with midge bites about the only thing that soothes her sore skin and stops her scratching is aloe vera.
Hope you get some more scientific pointers!

Hi Sarah I just wondered whether one of those lycra hoods that cover the face and neck would help at all? Good Luck, Angela

I was going to suggest a hood! Perhaps Calamine lotion or something similar would take the itch out.

Thank you for all your advice.
The wound is dry now, and he has stopped rubbing it, which is great. I guess it will just take a while for the hair to grow back!
He seems to have recovered from his virus, and now that the snow has gone, it will be good to get him back out hacking again.
Best wishes, Sarah. xx
