With the weather in Houston making headline news at the moment, the Houston Mounted Police Patrol have posted a video showing their evacuation arrangements for the horses when hurricanes threaten. They have learned from previous extreme weather conditions to get the arrangements into place very quickly. There are 35 happily, healthily barefoot working police horses of 18 different breeds, including draught horses and draught crosses. The funds raised from sponsorship and by fans of Smash, the deaf paint horse, pay for improvements in all the facilities associated with the horses, who are clearly much loved. One horse is 18 years old and still working. Officer Greg Sokoloski (now retired) who introduced barefoot management to the patrol, as well as superior stabling and exercise arrangements and natural horsemanship training, firmly believes that barefoot management keeps the horses healthier and less prone to lameness and illness of various kinds. This is the video (with the usual problems of wind noise and an interviewer who isn't used to horses!) showing where the horses have been moved to during the current extreme conditions in Houston:- en-gb.facebook.com/SmashTheHoustonMountedPatrolHorse/posts/1273466129431739Dawn Perkins
