What an exciting rehab reunion the one planned for 2017 will be! And I have no doubt that, amongst the ex-rehabs, there will be at least some whose owners were told that they "can't go barefoot because...!" rockleyfarm.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/5r.htmlDawn Perkins

I have just posted Nic Barker's link to an article by Tomas Teskey (former farrier and vet in America who now practises barefoot management) on the Paddock Paradise thread. I have posted links to Tomas Teskey before because his training and experience has covered all aspects of hoof and limb care. He has no doubt whatsoever that shoeing is harmful to hooves. Having looked at his Facebook page again, it is interesting to see that he has posted a link to one of Nic's blogs and also to this very interesting piece of research (intended, of course, to benefit the racing industry, who can afford to fund this kind of research, unlike ordinary businesses such as Rockley Farm who can only prove their findings by showing the horses who have benefited from them):- Another of his posts shows a link to cadaver hooves, showing how the hoof's natural ability to flex over rough terrain is compromised by a rigid shoe. From time to time, I look to see if other mounted police patrols around the world have followed the lead set by Houston. Although I knew that Doc and Bubba - police horses with Madison County Mounted Police Patrol - were barefoot, I didn't realise that all the horses in the patrol were barefoot. Once again, the benefits of working the horses barefoot are set out, as is the importance of diet in enabling the horses to grow strong, resilient hooves which can cope with tough, abrasive surfaces:- www.madisonmounted.org/infotraining.htmlwww.madisonmounted.org/gallery.htmlDawn Perkins

I hope everyone enjoyed a happy Christmas and will have a happy New Year filled with love and goodwill. These are some of the lovely posts on the Madison County Mounted Patrol Facebook page. The horses, like those of the Houston Mounted Patrol, are all kept happily barefoot and are also huge:- Dawn Perkins

This very recent Horse & Hound article features Nic Barker as one of the contributors on the question of whether it is safe to ride horses in snowy conditions:- www.horseandhound.co.uk/features/riding-snow-safe-470263And I have posted this 10 year-old video of Sarah Braithwaite and friends before but it is worth watching again to see how good barefoot hoof traction is (even if that of the rider's shod feet isn't!) and how there is no problem with balling of snow in the hooves:- vimeo.com/9438805Dawn Perkins

A lovely light-hearted moment with the wonderful Houston Mounted Police Patrol at the Superbowl. The horses' hooves are sound and so they don't normally wear hoof boots but boots are used for protection in situations which could become volatile and where there might be hazards present such as broken glass. The advantage of using boots, rather than shoes, is that they offer protection to the whole of the sole while potential hazards are present but they can be taken off when the horses go back to normal patrol duties:- www.facebook.com/SmashTheHoustonMountedPatrolHorse/videos/1086112314833789/?permPage=1Dawn Perkins

Correction to the above post: Isla is an ex-Rockley Farm rehab, Mango isn't. However, both are kept barefoot.

A nice post from Madison County mounted police patrol, who are proud that all their six horses have always been kept barefoot:- Dawn Perkins
