Best of luck for the bone scan tomorrow, Sarah, it will be such a relief to know what's making him so sore. We will be thinking of both of you.

Well, I spoke to the vet last night, and I am cautiously optimistic. ;D
The bone scan showed hot spots on knees and back which is to be expected for a pony of 15 years old.
But there was a, or some, hot spots on his back, which the vet thinks is the main cause of his problems. So, on Monday, when he is no longer radioactive, the vet will x-ray his back to see exactly what is going on and what treatment might be appropriate. The vet will also x-ray to see if there has been any movement in his pedal bones, as we have a suspicion he may have had laminitis way back. So, at the moment, the vet is hopeful that he will be able to take me hacking again, but is not sure for how long he will be ok.
I just cant wait to have him back home again, I miss him so much.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, Sarah. xx

Thanks Avril, Angela and Em - I cant wait to give him a scratch and a hug.
I will let you all know what the x-rays reveal on Monday - the vet said she may use a cortisone injection, depending on what she finds. I have never dealt with sore backs before in my horses, so its a bit of a learning curve for me.
Hope you are having a good weekend and enjoying some of the Equestrian footage from the Olympics.

A little update - Lucky had cortisone injections deep in his pelvic area, and went back 3 weeks later for numerous muscle activating injections literally from wither to rump. Last Friday, he saw the amazing physio Amanda Sutton, who thankfully agreed with me that the 3 months of lunging in side reins as advised by the vet was not going to help! So, she has shown me an exercise to do with him, to stretch his neck and back gently, activating all the little muscles. She also did some treatment on him. Then she showed me something that was designed by a colleague - basically it involves those sort of resistance bands that we use in the gym, one goes round his back end and one under his belly, and basically it is to help him become aware of where his back end is, how he is using himself, etc and help stimulate the muscles which have become switched off, and I have to walk him out in hand while he is wearing it. We did this for the first time today and he was fine with it, so lets hope it helps. Amanda also suggested I speak to a nutritionist, as copper helps build up muscle, and apparently we have low levels here. Also, its difficult knowing what to feed a roughty tufty native pony, who was in low/no work, and has possibly had laminitis in the past ..... not an easy balance! Also, she has suggested I get his saddle opened right up, to check that there is nothing odd going on inside, which would not be obvious during a normal check and reflock. So, hopefully we are investigating all possible causes of his problem, and fingers crossed after about 3 months of correct tlc etc he might be ok. Now, some pics, but please dont shoot me down in flames and accuse me of starving him ( I really havent been. ) but you will see why I have been so worried. Lucky when he was in work, pain free and happy. Lucky now. And Lucky with his muscle activator! So, fingers crossed he is soon looking and feeling so much better. Thanks for looking, Sarah. xx

Thanks Jane, one friend saw the pic of Lucky wearing his Equicore equipment, and said it looked like he was going out in his bondage gear! No wonder I am getting so many strange looks when we are out walking! ;D Best wishes, Sarah. xx

A little update on Lucky, for anyone who is interested. He is just starting to put on a little weight, with some careful grazing on grass and a change in his diet. He lost so much during/after his stay at the vets. I am continuing his work in hand, but feel I am not making progress really, and he is not particularly impressed doing it. I got Meg's trainer to watch him on the lunge today, and she is very straight talking and gave me her opinion. I have the physio returning next week to check on progress. I am also getting some input from someone I trust more than all the vets and physios put together, so that I make sure I end up doing what is right for Lucky, whether that is changing his exercise regime, giving him the winter off and see how he is next year, or if I decide to let him be a man of leisure with his best mate Eddie. I am so lucky that I can occasionally borrow Simon's horse Flame, and although he doesnt suit my joint problems, it is still lovely to be in the saddle. Crispin's Karen told me to put this picture up, so you can blame her for the following! ;D So, I will let you know what the outcome is for Lucky once I know a bit more. Thanks for all your support, Sarah. xx

What a lovely lovely pic.. and sarah you are more than connected to your horses than you allow yourself to believe... so you go with your gut instincts on lucky I think you know what is best .. it is just about being brave enough with those who have initials after their name and tell them you want to try something else
Good luck honey I do think about you and lucky often x x x

A quick update on Lucky. I have had feedback from some people I respect and trust implicitly, and had the physio out again today. We have decided to stop all the in hand work etc, and see how he gets on over the winter, weight wise, pain levels, and coping without the interest of having a job to do. However, the likely hood of Lucky being suitable for ridden work in the future is very slim. Thanks for all your support - I just hope that I make the right decisions for Lucky, whatever they may be. Sarah. xx

Hi Sarah,
Doing a mammoth catch-up following my hols. I love the pics - well the one of Lucky when he was pain-free and happy and the one of you on Flame.
At risk of asking a question that you have answered elsewhere, how quickly did Lucky go from looking as he does in the first pic to the second pics? It really is quite a transformation, poor boy, no wonder you have been so worried about him - and I really feel for you having to make decisions for him now. I so hope his winter hols help him, we know how powerful our gut instincts are and we also know how many a racehorse/competition horse, turned out and given time to rest and recuperate, has healed itself.
Please do keep us updated although I do realise patience is going to required.
I'm sending as many healing vibes as I possibly can across the ether to Lucky and a virtual hug and supportive vibes to you.
Helen xx
