Hi all a little advise please, I put a post up about my yearling biting, well he has been gelded and he is a lot better, it's just the old nip now and again, I can work on that. Now we have the problem with him walking on. This is happening all the time when I'm bring him in from the field. If there is anybody else with me this isn't a problem, it's when I'm by myself, which is 99 percent of the time. In the school no problem, he will walk on even trot in hand. I've had him lunging a couple of mins on each side, and he his doing really well, I just can't get him from the field to the stable block to groom him without a fight. I've used a schooling whip and now I'm on to the lung whip just to tickle his bum with the end of it because it's longer. ( I don't use the string on the end, I hold that bit at the top on my hand ). He is very stubbon, he will rather go backwards into what ever is there then go forwards. He goes forward for a few strides then digs his heels in and won't go anywhere but back. Help I'm finding frustrating.

He is too young for lunging so I'd shelve that for now! My boy has a real stubborn streak so I know how you feel. He responds best to praise so I hate to tell you but there's no quick way! What I used to do is just put firm pressure on the lead rope and keep it there until he offered a step forward. Then straight away, drop the pressure and act like it's the best thing he's ever done! Just a warning, you might be there for 20 minutes - I was! But he's 6 now and we never have that problem anymore so you will crack it, just keep at it. Nothing with youngsters can be done in a hurry (I remember his first bath - good grief) x
