Hi every one on the forum who actually owns all to themselves a safe cob... I am very very lucky to have two safecobs on holiday with me Puzzle and Bluebell.. does this qualify me sort of to have a post in your section?? probably not but am sure you won't mind just this once!!
It is so wonderful to hear your experiences with your horses .. if P & B are an example of the standard of horses to leave Avrils then you are all very lucky indeed and I wish you all the best for your future achievements with your four legged friends.. Some day soon i will actually be a real MSC owner but till then babysitting two of them is an utter delight and reading your posts are uplifting and some times thought provoking which is great.. keep posting .. Em x

Hi Liz
I am so sorry it must have been a really hard decision and you must mis your riding terribly.. I'l bet you have some wonderful, funny memories.. do you get a dose of horses at all now?
Your right also it is proving to be a very cathartic experience having these two lovely very pretty safe cobs... Due to life getting in the way i have not had my own horse for well over fifteen years and I missed it terribly but I didnt realise quite how much until Bluebell and Puzzle arrived...I worry I am ruining all of Avrils work because my daughter and i spoil them terribly but they are just so lovely.. (Sorry Avril!) Bluebell has quite an impish look about her but she is so gentle and loving with a real playful sense of humour whereas Puzzle although sensitive has clearly seen it, done it and worn the t-shirt! she is very forgiving of us humans My daughter cuddles her endlessly and has groomed her to an inch of her life... I have to admit I am very partial to Bluebell She has the most expressive eyes and face.. you always feel she is on the verge of telling you something .. I have great hope Avrils course will make me understand more fully her language,, i would love to hear about your horse if you wish to share.. Em x

Most of my friends have horses so I do get a good dose quite often, mostly youngsters! It was lovely to meet Avril's lovely horses and ponies last weekend However, I did miss Dunster Show last Friday which is near me in West Somerset where my friend's 2yo came 3rd in the in hand coloured class. Pretty good! I think my next planned horsey event is to accompany a friend to a stud sale at a reputable sport horse stud in North Devon. They breed some nice horses and have some nice stallions including Prince of Darkness and Lostock Huntsman. I'm not buying - just making sure my friend keeps her hands in her pockets! I went to a similar sale recently near Tiverton and they had some beautiful youngsters, around 60 in all, but the prices were disappointing. A few went for between £7 and £9k but the average for was probably around £3k with 2 foals selling for good prices. They do say that fools breed horses for wise men to buy! A breeder simply cannot make a profit selling for such low prices.

Em, I'll tell you a bit about the Safecob I had. Duke was (still is!) a lovely horse with a terrific temperament, very easy to clip, shoe and load. He is a Norman cob, was 4 rising 5 when I bought him and measured 16hh but matured when about 7yo to around 16.3hh! He is quite forward going and reasonably well schooled. I had the help of a friend and she schooled him twice a week and he was doing 20m circles in all paces, leg yielding, turns around the forehand and just about managed a flying change! He found the last one quite hard. He is light in the mouth but can be strong in canter and he can certainly shift for such a big horse!! ;D He's very willing and I would say he has a bit about him and is not a horse for a really nervous, novice rider though a confident novice would be OK. He is a very handsome chap and very different from my previous horses who were all TB crosses. He loves playing in his field and has been known to grab a tarpaulin in his teeth and charge around with it streaming out behind him! He was always covered in nip marks when I had him, a result of playing with his chum, Wilson, a Clydesdale cross! The pair of them fairly shook the ground when thundering around! When I had him, he followed me around like a shadow when poo picking the field and would occasionally tip the wheel barrow over! He had manners to burn in the stable. For some reason, he seemd to dislike red cars - anything else was OK but not red cars! His current owners have taken him to a couple of small shows where they were placed in hunter classes! He enjoyed jumping but was VERY enthusiastic! All in all, he was a lovely fun horse.

oh he sounds wonderful and what a character!! its wonderful to see a horse truly express himself and his personality... I had a wonderful big chap on loan many years ago who i would turn out and with in five minites he would be stood outside his stable! not in a panic at all just stood there almost with an expression of ta da here I am aren't i clever.. he would belly crawl under the fence he was 17.2!! once I turned him out again he would stay there happily grazing. why he did it who knows?? .. I am down to Avrils on Friday as i am attending one of her courses I can;t wait... i will probably make a fool of myself and find out i know very little about our four legged friends!! but thats why i am going to learn.. will let you know how it goes em x

Hi Liz & EM, I am still a safecob owner, I've had George over 5 years now. A mini Duke at 15.3hh but very similar. He too can shift for a big fellow and having taught him to jump last summer he rewarded me by jumping out of his field over 4 foot electric fencing (from a standstill!). He also works well in the school and can do flying changes, nothing to do with me, he knows when he needs to change legs! Very much a family member even my youngest horse shy 11 year son has ridden him. Recently he rode him out on a hack (not even on a lead rein), George behaved impeccably, he takes his responsibilities very seriously.
