I came across this Facebook page for enthusiasts of bitless dressage:- www.facebook.com/pages/Bitless-and-beautiful-for-dressage/322184784593678The footage "Open Your Eyes" is painful to watch. I just wish that, for those riders who choose to use bits in competition, the rules for their use could be completely re-written and closely overseen by someone like Avril. It's hard to forget the pleading look in one horse's eyes, in particular. Dawn Perkins

This is a blog from Cynthia Cooper which refers back to one she wrote in 2013. I think I posted it at the time but it contains quite useful tips on transitioning to bitless and there is a link to other helpful articles. Cynthia has now produced a bitless dressage bridle. She has been producing bitless nosebands (which can be attached to an existing bridle to replace the bit) for some time but has recently produced a bitless dressage noseband for those who are able to compete bitless but who already have a dressage bridle. She has also recently started producing a bitless dressage bridle which has an extra buckle in the cheekpiece so that a bit can be attached if the competition requires it. www.lightriderbridle.com/articles.htmlWhat I find encouraging is that, elsewhere in the world at least, there is now a demand from customers for bitless dressage bridles! Cynthia Cooper makes the LightRider version of a bitless dressage bridle (or just the bitless noseband to attach to a conventional dressage bridle), as well as other styles, including English and rope. For horses who prefer the "whole head hug" of a cross-under bridle, Dr Cook also makes a bitless dressage bridle. This post is from the Bitless Inc Facebook page. I wonder how long it will be before British dressage catches up with other, more enlightened, countries in this regard:- Dawn Perkins

This article on bitless dressage is on Cynthia Cooper's Natural Horse World Facebook page:- dressagetoday.com/article/bitless-bridle-debate-28386?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=postplanner&utm_source=facebook.comAnyone who has seen the Alizee Froment training video and performance video with Mistral (to which I have previously pasted links) knows the precision and delicacy of movement which can be achieved bitless and, with advocates like Carl Hester, it seems odd that it is still regarded as an issue. It seems that the rigid application of the requirement to ride with a bit may be due to a misinterpretation of the original rules which were written in French! As with barefoot, maybe there needs to be more open opportunity to showcase both, so that owners and riders can judge for themselves. Dawn Perkins

The wonderful Houston Mounted Police Patrol horses are all barefoot (although one of the horses in these photographs is wearing boots on the fronts - could be transitioning to barefoot if he/she is a new recruit) but are often ridden bitless on patrol too, as here:- Dawn Perkins
