Erika, so good to hear you are managing walking hacks on George. I hope he can make good progress and be back to normal hacking in time. As you say, the ground is SO hard that you wouldnt want to do much more anyway.
Best wishes,
Sarah. xx

Well, doesn't time fly! Got the vet out a couple of weeks ago to assess George and he had gone lame on the other front leg. So he has had a steriod injection into this foot as well. The vet was very pleased with the progress on the previously bad leg. I also got the McTimony practitioner out to check him out which was very interesting. She found a bit of stiffness in his back and shoulder and has given me instruction on some exercises to do with George. The day after his treatment, George leapt out of his stable, (it is on a raised plinth), squealing with delight and promptly did 6 laps of the paddock in bucking, rearing canter, by which time he was puffed out. He just looked so much better. I have still taken it very easy with George and on a hack last weekend his rear leg was all inflammed and swollen. He wasn't showing any lameness but I couldn't believe it. I have rested him this week and had a short ride yesterday which was fine. I think that the poor lad is just all out of balance at the moment and needs to get his body working properly before his various ailments settle down. He seems quite happy in himself which is the main thing. I will keep you posted! Erika & George

Well we are half way through October and it's still up and down. We have been doing lots of short walk hacks that have gone pretty well. Have just started a bit of trotting, George has been really stiff but loosened with work. Did a little bit of trot work just before the back lady came, he returned sound and she gave him some treatment but was happy with his overall progress. 3 days later he was lame again . I have rested him for a week, but today we was so keen to ride out that for the first time he walked away from the mounting block whilst I was half on. I'm not good at cowboy vaulting but I managed to hang on. George was shod in the week but he was not his usual relaxed self. Whilst he didn't kick up a fuss he wasn't asleep as normal and seemed quite (and quietly) anxious when his back foot was shod. The farrier concluded that he is probably lame on 3 legs (great joy). He is not on bute yet, but he is definitely sore on his feet. I am getting the vet out again on Wednesday to assess his progress. He is definitely better, but still not right. A combination of back and leg problems but want is causing what, who knows. Still a great big soft cuddely teddy bear despite his issues.... Erika and George

Glad George's spirits are still high even though he isn't firing on all cylinders at the moment. I do hope he overcomes the setbacks, you must sorely miss riding him regularly. Have to say we miss reading the latest account of life out and about with George. Fingers crossed for a complete recovery.

Well the vet came out yesterday and he felt that George was much better than he expected. He did the flexion test on all his legs and made me trot him up and down the road. George showed no signs of lameness and "seems quite spritely" to use his words. However, he also has advised me that because George has some arthritis that he will have good days and not such good days and that his feet probably are permanently sore because of the arthritis. He was clearly having a good day yesterday.. I moved him and his companion Murphy into their winter paddock and George went ballistic. 6 laps of the paddock and much bucking and rodeoing around he didn't look like a horse on his last legs. So for the moment George is being put onto bute to see if this helps manage his condition. The vet has also suggested using Equidronate which might help. It sounds pretty horrible stuff so I am holding fire on that at the moment. Does anybody have any experience of this especially in treating side bone or arthritis in horses?

Erika, wonderful news the vet thought George was looking so much better.
I hope he continues to do well and has lots of "better" days.

Thanks Sarah, My husband rode George on Friday and had a great ride. George was "up for it" and they did a lot of trotting and cantering. Apparently George was also up for some jumping but hubbie decided against it as he hasn't done much. Hubbie was rather surprised at such a fast and energetic ride after being told all the tales of woe from me! I must admit considering that the two didn't not get along well for the first year, given the choice I think George would pick Hubbie to me. Could it be all the nice ladies on their fancy horses that keep stopping to chat and admire them I wonder? Still on the bute but it is really helping.

Happy New Year everyone, Missed the christmas wishes as I have been too busy riding! Yipee George is definitely on the up and is feeling much better. Still not perfect but clearly moving in the right direction. We have been riding a lot over Christmas, longer distances including some trotting and lots of cantering. George is much more forward going, and even in trot after the first few hesitant strides is really going forward, much more his old self. He is enjoying the soft conditions and quite strong in his new found well-being. I am not complaining as it is toning up my arms and shoulders nicely. I have the back lady coming on Thursday to give some more treatment and generally assess his well being. George has been on 1 sachet of bute per day for the last 2 months but this hasn't been a miracle cure, (no sudden improvement), so I may look to reduce this or eliminate it on advice of the vet.
Long may it continue, it is good to have the boy back in almost normal form.

Well George is unsound again now that the ground is harder. He is absolutely fine in walk but definitely sore in trot, so we are just walking everywhere which he is enjoying. It is also all I can manage as I have badly damaged the ligaments in my ankle and some days can barely walk. He is happy enough in himself and the farrier says that he is not as sore as he had been but that it might take up to a year for him to sort himself out. It is great to see him from the house now that the horses are on the summer paddock. He is quite a busy-body during the day by the time he has chatted to all the neighbouring horses and their owners who always come over to stroke him. I am planning to ride him to the pub tomorrow for Mother's day, he usually causes a bit of a stir. Everybody loves to stoke him when he is still so fluffy like a great big bear. I hope everybody is enjoying the dry weather and the light evenings. Have fun with your trusted steeds, Erika & George

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, Can you believe it, it is 10 years since I bought George. Doesn't time fly! He is a contented boy, but pretty well retired now due to on going lameness issues. A combination of sidebone and arthritis though as the moment he is the best he has been all year. No idea why other than the ground is really soft. We get out for short walking hacks twice a week which he enjoys and despite being sore is still able and willing to clamber up and down muddy banks and is still very solid on his feet. He does manage the odd trot and canter around the field when he is being a busy-body but gets out of puff quite quickly as he is not at all fit. He is now stabled at night which he seems to appreciate and he does have a proper lie-down sleep which I guess also helps.
I cannot say that I am missing the riding much in this miserable weather. The bridleways are swamps at the moment and I am quite surprised that we manage to come back with a complete set of shoes. Still at least the days are getting longer, if the sun ever decides to put in an appearance we might even be able to notice it!
Anyway enjoy your horses, spring is just around the corner, Best wishes, Erika & George
